CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Consumer products are all those disposable materials that are used in repairing a car.

The following are the names of main materials used extensively by any handicraft company. In making an estimate they are usually not included in the rate of labour and are calculated by multiplying the total hours of painting by the cost present under the voice “reference economic parameters”. If we had to classify them by importance, certainly the first place would be occupied by the paint, both for its high cost, and because in the processing it always has the last say. The paint of any automobile is reproduced thanks to the use of a dispenser and of a computerised scale to measure out the multiple colour bases that make up the hue of the vehicle. The paint may be either mono-layer and double layered. The mono-layer paint is composed of one single colouring product that is glossy and bright when dry. The double-layered paint is composed of two products: the first is a matt colouring base, the second is a transparent product that gives a shiny and bright touch to the final painting process. The metallic and micalised (containing periate bases) paints are double-layered while pastel paints can be both mono-layered and double-layered. The double-layered paint has better quality since it does not risk oxidation, that is the discoloration often seen on cars of older generations, but it requires a more accurate processing because of its poor coating and filling power. The most expensive painting is the one requiring modern micalised paints, since they are composed of periate and iridescent bases giving different shimmers depending on the viewpoints. Going back to our classification, the second place would be given to the filler, thanks also to its popularity. A wrong commonplace sees this material as a symbol of a low quality job; however, without filler it would not be possible to repair or to replace a metal sheet. What is important is obviously not to use it in excess, and not to use it to fill but to put the finishing touches.
